5 things abortion clinics can do to increase votes for abortion access

The New York Times published an article titled “Under Pressure, Biden Issues Executive Order on Abortion” on July 8, 2022. It details President Biden’s decision to sign an executive order to protect abortion access while noting that the order lacked a plan of action to help him achieve his goal. The fastest way to guarantee abortion rights is by electing lawmakers who support these services. As Biden puts it, “the court’s majority in the decision ‘practically dares’ women to assert their political power to put in place laws that restore abortion rights” (Shear and Stolberg).

Biden’s message to abortion advocates is clear: Vote. But do nonprofit organizations that offer abortion services have a responsibility to promote Biden’s agenda? Should they take a political stance against their widely concerning restrictions? As companies that continuously support their patients’ best interests, I believe they should advocate for them in any way possible. Here are some ways reproductive healthcare organizations can support citizen action when the election rolls around.

1. Educate existing patients

Patients seeking services from abortion clinics will most likely appreciate information about how they can inspire a policy change. One way to leverage existing patients is to inform them about the current state of abortion rights—Follow-up appointments by providing the education they need to decide where to cast their vote.

2. Take advantage of newsletters

Planned Parenthood Del Mar sends out an exemplary newsletter four times a year. The Summer 2022 edition includes employee testimonials and handwritten letters, but it might be enhanced by information about the importance of the upcoming election.

3. Do important research

Look into potential candidates ahead of the election and try to stay as up-to-date as possible. Make sure to engage in discussions about the constantly-changing political landscape.

4. Endorse politicians who have your best interest in mind

People look to organizations they trust to understand how specific policies affect them. Publicize political candidates you trust to do the work to keep your organization as accessible as possible.

5. Register to vote

Voting may be the most efficient and promising way to change the current policies. Believe your vote matters, because it does. Remember, we are stronger together!

This November, voters will decide on the future of abortion in California, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, and Vermont. Here are the links to register to vote in these five states. Register and use your vote to ensure the right to abortion.
